William F. Ritschel, American, (1864–1949)

Uahnie Maitai, Tahiti (aka Portrait of a South Seas at Stream)

ca. 1922
Painting
Oil on board
23 x 19 in. (58.42 x 48.26 cm)
Gift of Patricia Smith Ramsey in memory of Robert J. Ramsey
Accession Number: 1991.299

Although he made Carmel Highlands his permanent home after 1911, Ritschel continued to travel the world, particularly the South Seas. His early experiences as a sailor in the North Sea (similar to Hansen's) were to influence his lust for travel throughout his life. This intimate scene lacks the light-filled airiness of his California paintings.
