The purchase of David Ligare's Magna Fide in 2020 has expanded and enriched the Museum-s collection of his work. This major canvas, measuring 60 x 80 inches, was acquired by MMA in honor of David's 75th birthday. As in so many of his paintings, classical references are present. The Latin words Magna Fide (great faith) have the double meaning, of course, of magnified
- or close inspection, of the content. A small temple contains a globe sitting atop a flame on a granite outcropping bathed in intense California sunlight, with Ligare's usual horizon line dividing sea and sky. While the realism is unquestioned, the painting leaves the viewer to interpret the seemingly unrelated, but universally familiar, objects.
