John Steinbeck referred to the golden hills surrounding his hometown of Salinas as the pastures of heaven.
For many years David Ligare inhabited this specific landscape, including it often in paintings which, in fact, refer to classical Greco-Roman events and subjects. Here the golden California light suffuses and defines the rocky outcroppings. Like the crow we are witness to this moment. The painting takes us from the softly weathered boulder in the foreground, to the rocky monument with its abundance of ascending shrubbery, and then on to a very distant purple hill. If we imagine the scene without the narrow horizontal strip of grass in the foreground, our sense of being there would be diminished.
