This small watercolor, painted early in his career, demonstrates Ligare's interest in the textures and volume of simple objects. He uses shadow to describe the surface of the stone mortero, while leaving unpainted the white paper depicting the oyster shells to pop off the picture plane.
What we also see in this piece is a use of horizontal shapes found so often in his later works.
