Born in 1906, and trained in Boston and NYC, Abbie Lou Bosworth moved to Carmel in the mid-1930's where she became active in the Carmel Art Association. She lived in town until her death in 1983. This oil painting of Murphy's Barn reflects the turn in direction that painting of the 1930's had taken, away from pure landscape and toward images that included people. Here we see two men (carpenters?) outside of Murphy's Lumberyard, named for M.J. Murphy who had established his lumber business in Carmel in 1904. Moved to Carmel Valley Village in 1946, the business is still in operation today, run by a Murphy grandson. Although appearing to be a simple snapshot
of a street scene, this painting has particular historic significance in that M. J. Murphy built many of Carmel's homes and noteable early structures including the Pine Inn, the La Playa, and the Carmel Highlands Inn.
