McCormick's depictions of Monterey's early structures were relatively large oil paintings, many of them commissioned by the City of Monterey. Lieutenant (eventually General) William Sherman lived in this house from 1847-1849 when he had command over troops constructing a fort at the contemporary site of the Presidio of Monterey. He went on to famously lead Union campaigns that resulted in the utter destruction of the infrastructure of the Confederate south.
