George Joseph Koch (aka George Kotch), American, (1884–1951)

Natural Arch

Oil on canvas
44 x 50 in. (111.76 x 127 cm)
Gift of Janet C. McDaniel
Accession Number: 2019.041

After visiting California in 1914, George Koch returned in 1917 to establish a home in the Carmel Highlands. Like his neighbor, William Ritschell, Koch was inspired to paint seascapes of the rocky outcroppings below his home. Similar to Ritschell's Mammoth Cove, the perspective and the scale of this scene give it power. We are looking down the face of the roughly painted rocks into surging water. The large size of the canvas is striking. And the deep shadows contrast with the sun-drenched surfaces, adding to a sense of drama.
