Many of Fortune's early works were destroyed in the San Francisco earthquake and fires in 1906. Like so many artists, she was prompted by the disastrous fires to look elsewhere for housing. From 1913 through 1920, she and her mother spent summers in Monterey where she eventually settled, becoming one of the early members of the Carmel Art Association.
