Although not technically an adobe but rather a stone house, the building that is presently home to the Monterey Museum of Art is pictured here in 1932. In 1836 the structure was recorded as owned by the widow of Antonio Castro during the Mexican Period. It was passed down through various members of the Castro family, and was purchased in the early 1920's by Hollywood script writer Gouverneur Morris and his wife. They enlarged the house to 8,000 square feet, and put it to use as a lavish destination for such Hollywood guests as Charlie Chaplin, Pola Negri and Theda Bara. This painting was done just after the stock market crash caused the Morris's financial collapse and foreclosure of the house. It was then owned by the Work family until Frank Work gifted it to the Museum in 1983.
