This brightly moonlit nocturne is peaceful and poetic. As in several of Fitzgerald's paintings in the MMA Collection, a human presence is only suggested; here the warm light emitting from the boats-€™ interiors lets us know there are people present. It-€™s interesting to compare this scene with some of the late-evening paintings by Armin Hansen in which there is clearly a struggle between man and the sea, not the quiet partnership suggested here.
