California Impressionism,
or the California Style
as it was sometimes called, was distinguished by its artists' full embrace of the abundant California sunshine. William Wendt preferred to paint en plein air so as to experience the effects of sunlight on natural surfaces. Here he brings drama and beauty to this otherwise unremarkable scene through dappled sunlight, rolling dunes, and a high horizon line. Although he was known as a Southern California artist, this may very well be a scene of Monterey dunes as Wendt often visited the Central Coast, and in fact showed works in the newly established art gallery in the Hotel Del Monte.
