Torrey was born to generations of New England Protestants. Before settling in Southern California in 1923, he spent several years in Paris as did almost every aspiring American artist at the beginning of the 20th century. The influence of French Impressionism is clearly apparent in this still life. The contrasting warm and cool colors, the animated brushwork, and the masterful handling of shadow and reflection make this ordinary
subject exceptional.
