Charles Rollo Peters, American, (1862–1928)

Low Tide, Strawbwerry Point (Marin)

Oil on canvas
16.25 x 24.25 in. (41.275 x 61.595 cm)
Gift of Stanley and Darby Worth
Accession Number: 1992.147

Across the Golden Gate from where he grew up in San Francisco, this now built-up neighborhood of Strawberry Point was, in Charles Rollo Peters' time, a rural and fairly wild cape. As a young artist he was attracted to its hills and inlets. In this painting he interprets a simple scene in rich subjective color. What is curious is the inclusion of the signpost standing askew in the water; it demands our attention and gives the scene a feel of awkward human intrusion.
