This richly colored scene is painted in a style that evolved from the Post-Impressionists. Del Mue-s cropped composition, where we look from the shadowed edge of a redwood forest out at the sunlit hills, feels comfortable and accessible. As a teenager Del Mue studied with Arthur Mathews at the Mark Hopkins Institute. He then spent a year in Paris where he roomed with his S.F. friend, Gottardo Piazzoni. (Piazzoni would later marry Del Mue's sister.) Back in San Francisco he joined in with in S.F.'s growing artists- community which centered on the Bohemian Club and the SF Art Association.
