Once Dougherty and his wife settled on the Monterey Peninsula in 1931, he was inspired to paint many views of the rugged landscape. Here we see the jagged seacoast just South of Carmel. By situating the viewer on the rocks in the foreground, Dougherty gives this broad vista a sense of you-are-there intimacy. The movement of the waves is palpable, the sunlight glimmering on the wave crests.
