This scene of rolling hills, grasses, and oaks depicts the ranch built by Swiss immigrant and dairy farmer, John Berta, who settled in Carmel Valley in 1887. With limited detail and palette, Fitzgerald manages to create a sense of depth, from the road leading us into the farm buildings to the rolling golden hills beyond. The cool dark green trees tumble down the ravine and into the farmyard. Although lacking any trace of man or animal, the scene feels strangely occupied.
