When compared to similar subjects by Mathews, McCormick, McComas and others, O'Shea's scene of cypress trees seems remarkably modern in composition and palette. Although his colors here could be called tonalist in their limited range, the painting is anything but meditative. Rather it is an emotional response to the elegant energetic strength of these coastal sentries. Note the use of deep shadow to give the scene depth.
