Francis McComas, American, (1874–1938)

Cypress, Monterey

Oil on canvas
41 x 60 in. (104.14 x 152.4 cm)
Gift of Jane and Justin Dart
Accession Number: 2009.039

Although sometimes criticized by San Francisco contemporaries for his cubist leanings, McComas's paintings earned many awards across the country. This Monterey coastal scene of a large tangle of cypress trunks and branches against an unsettled sky is both dramatic and peaceful. The warm quiet Tonalist hues of the clouds, echoed in the foreground, contrast with the vivid strong primary greens and blues of foliage and water and sky. Shapes and planes intersect and overlap. The asymmetry of the composition creates a lively dynamic.
