John O'Shea, American, (1876–1956)

Across the Bay (aka The Blue Sea)

ca.1919
Painting
Oil on board
16 x 20 in. (40.64 x 50.8 cm)
Gift of Barbara and William Hyland
Accession Number: 1991.268

Of the three John O-€™Shea seascapes in the Collection, this oil on board is markedly smaller than the two large canvases. But its bold brushwork, animated colors, and geometric shapes give it an energy and a modernist feel, different from the other two. Beyond the sunlit foreground rocks, the composition recedes in bands of color creating the ocean, the sky and the distant coast.
