© Estate of S.C. Yuan
Born in Hangchow, China, S.C. Yuan learned the discipline of the Chinese masters as a young man. When he came to the San Francisco in 1950 he worked briefly as a cook at the Fairmont Hotel, then settled in Carmel two years later where he turned to painting full-time. He was prolific, juggling his passion for painting with the need to provide for a family; the Yuans had several restaurants and a gallery over the years.
The pastoral subject of this Castroville farmhouse is livened by Yuan's dynamic thick brushwork and the strong diagonal elements of the foreground and the clouds pulling against each other. Typical of Yuan's style are the dabs of rich orange and yellow pigment against more muted colors, drawing our attention to the midground.
