Xavier Martinez's small oil-on-board sketch epitomizes the muted colors and soft contours of Tonalism, a term later applied to the Northern California artists who focused on mood and subjective expression, rather than the realism of the Impressionists. These small sketches were usually used as references for larger works produced in the studio. It-s interesting to compare this work with a watercolor by Francis McComas titled Coastal Landscape in the MMA Collection. The colors in both are very similar, as is the subject matter, although Martinez gives more consideration to the sky resulting in the feel of a bit more tension.
