Charles Rollo Peters, American, (1862–1928)

The Old Castro Home, Monterey

ca. 1920
Painting
Oil on canvas
Gift of an anonymous donor.
Accession Number: 1987.026

This smaller version of the Castro home was evidently made as a preliminary oil sketch for the larger painting. While this one lacks the detail of the final version, and the sketchy brush strokes are clearly visible, it has similar energy. The moonlit wall, the crooked shutter, and the light reflected from the window all give it life.

While in France, Peters had come across the work of James Abbott McNeill Whistler whose nocturnes he greatly admired. According to art historian Edan Hughes, Whistler once remarked that Peters was the only artist other than himself who could truly paint nocturnes.
