E. Charlton Fortune, American, (1885–1969)

Before Sunset

ca. 1920
Painting
Oil on canvas
20 x 26.25 in. (50.8 x 66.675 cm)
Gift of Monsignor Robert E. Brennan
Accession Number: 1985.043

This lively, unromanticized early evening scene of Monterey was painted en plein air as was the practice embraced by so many of the California artists, following the example of the French Impressionists. Fortune's many views of Monterey share the chromatic variety and sparkling light of Impressionism.
