Hatton Ranch was painted on location in 1920 where the Barnyard Shopping Center is now, at the mouth of Carmel Valley. Fortune's rich warm palette reflects the golden landscape of California. Her composition invites the viewer to follow along the split rail fence and into the barnyard. This work was exhibited at the Carmel Club of Arts and Crafts in the summer of 1920 where it won first prize.
