Col. Harold Mack, a wealthy rancher, purchased 30 acres on the outskirts of Monterey where he built a stately hacienda. He hired several local artists to decorate the home with murals and sculpture. And he commissioned McComas to paint this fanciful scene, complete with art nouveau deer leaping hither and thither through the re-imagined space of the Mack property. Having left his tonalist style behind, McComas painted this large modernist canvas shortly before his death at his Pebble Beach home at age 64.
