Gottardo Piazzoni, American, b. Switzerland, (1872–1945)

ca. 1929
Oil on panel
7.38 x 9.63 in. (18.745 x 24.46 cm)
Gift of Barbara and William Hyland
Accession Number: 1991.243

What is remarkable about this piece is its simplicity, its absence of detail. It is pure earth, sky, and moon, expressed in a simple metallic-toned palette. Piazzoni considered the land a manifestation of divinity. The natural world offered meditation. When asked by an interviewer, And what is your religion? Piazzoni hesitated, then replied, I think it is California.
