Granville Redmond, American, (1871–1935)

Oaks at Sunset

ca.1911
Painting
Oil on board
9.625 x 12 in. (24.448 x 30.48 cm)
Bequest of Beth and Mellon (Bud) Baird
Accession Number: 2006.032

Painted about the same time as Cattle at Pasture, this Northern California scene demonstrates the flattened shapes and limited tonalist colors that Redmond would have learned during his studies with Arthur Mathews at the California School of Design. The quiet oaks are silhouetted against the warm glow of an evening sky. In this very small oil painting, Redmond manages to convey an immense mood.
