Granville Redmond, American, (1871–1935)

Oil on canvas
16 x 20.25 in. (40.64 x 51.435 cm)
Accession Number: 1981.023

Although best known for his brilliant poppy fields, Granville Redmond-€™s works are actually evenly divided between tonalist and impressionist paintings. Redmond himself preferred his dimly lit nocturnes, dismissing his in-demand poppy compositions as -€œtoo popular.-€ In this composition we see his interest in atmospheric light as the sun (moon?) softly illuminates the landscape. As in most of his works a human presence is only implied.
