The Washington Hotel, demolished in 1914, is an example of McCormick's conscious endeavor to create a chronicle of Monterey's past. Erected in 1832 on the Northwest corner of Washington and Pearl, this was the first hotel built in Monterey and could accommodate over 100 guests. During the Constitutional Convention, when California's constitution was written, the entire hotel was leased for $1200/month to house the delegates.
