Born in England, Edwin Deakin emigrated to America at the age of 28 settling in the Midwest. Fourteen years later he moved to San Francisco where he shared a studio with fellow Englishman, Samuel Brookes. (Two of Brookes' paintings are in the MMA Collection.) Deakin became fascinated with the romantic and picturesque Spanish missions of old California. This view of a back street near Mission Dolores invites the viewer to amble along the shadow cast by the wooden fence. Although unremarkable in its content, the scene has an engaging genre quality to it.
