Although almost completely occupied with fishermen and their lives, Hansen occasionally turned to the kind of coastal scenes which were so inspirational to his peers. Here the ghostly Monterey cypress trees are silhouetted against a lively evening sky. The composition is striking in its darkness, with our eye drawn to the subtle wisps of pink in the clouds. The cropping of the tree on the left adds to its feeling of massiveness.
