January 19 – April 30, 2023
Monterey Collects California presents a never-before-seen survey of pre-1945 California Art drawn from over a dozen private collections in and around the Monterey area. The exhibition recognizes the artistic impact of the pre-1945 era, the backbone of the Museum’s collection, on the Monterey Peninsula and celebrates the collectors in our community whose commitment and care help keep the legacy alive. Monterey Collects California features select works rarely seen outside of private collection, including well-known California artists Armin Hansen and E. Charlton Fortune and several underrepresented contemporaries, enlightening the history, provenance, and backstory of this significant period in California Art.
We are deeply grateful to the dozens of area collectors who opened their doors to us to share their hidden treasures and subsequently made this unique exhibition possible.
