Ted Orland
TED ORLAND lives in Santa Cruz, California, where he pursues parallel careers in teaching, writing and photography.
Ted first met Ansel Adams when he enrolled as a young student in Adams’ Summer Photography Workshop in 1966. In succeeding years he returned to serve as Adams’ Workshop Assistant and as Instructor at fifteen Ansel Adams Yosemite Workshops. In the early 1970’s he also served as Ansel Adams personal darkroom assistant and printer of Adams’ Yosemite Special Edition Prints. In 2001, at the request of the Adams’ family and the National Park Service, he curated the major Ansel Adams Centennial Exhibit, Edges & Intersections, at the Yosemite Museum.
Ted’s own photography engages a wide range of contemporary subject matter, and is represented through The Ansel Adams Gallery. As a teacher, Ted taught photography at Stanford, University of Oregon and various Bay Area community colleges for about thirty years, and continues to teach Workshops in artistic development. As a writer, he co-authored (with David Bayles) the best-selling artist’s survival guide, Art & Fear, and also authored its companion volume, The View From the Studio Door.
